“If your favorite celebrities dressed like Africans, here’s what they would look like”
Artist Dennis Owusu-Ansah also known as Densah is quite the innovative type when it comes to the work he puts together. His art is deeply embedded in his culture and it influences every piece that he draws. I randomly came across his work while scrolling through Facebook and just like you when you see the images, I was beyond impressed. I got in contact with Densah and asked him a few questions.
1. What’s your inspiration behind your art?
The beauty of the African culture is the inspiration behind my art. After witnessing my friend get teased by a group of men for wearing a kente (traditional Ghanian attire) cloth on our way to church, I figured something must be done to change the perspective of people who are not familiar with the African culture.
They had no idea what my friend was wearing. One of the guys shouted “that man has a blanket wrapped around his body like its winter time”. I saw this incident as an opportunity to educate people about who we (Africans) are, and what we stand for through my art. I used various celebrities because they have a lot of influence on their fans.
By illustrating them in African clothing I hope it will bring awareness to our culture and allow people to start educating themselves on not only the African culture but other cultures.
2. How much does culture have to play in your day-to-day activities?
Culture plays a major role in my day-to-day activities. It helps me connect with others who share the same mindset and values. From the music I listen to, down to the food I eat everyday. Especially my Ghana Jollof rice which is so much better than Naija jollof All jokes.
3. Have any of the celebrities you’ve drawn seen your work?
As of now I haven’t received any responses from the celebrities I have drawn. But my followers and I are still working hard on Instagram, Facebook, and other social media sites to get their attention.
4. What does being cool mean to you?
It doesn’t mean anything to me. I produce art based on my own merit and feeling. If someone doesn’t think it’s cool that’s ok. It won’t discourage me.
